Had a most interesting excursion to Pulau Semakau with my grassroots leaders this afternoon. We started Semakau Landfill in 1999 by enclosing part of the sea between two existing offshore islands, Pulau Semakau and Pulau Sakeng. This freed up much-needed space on the mainland for other developments.
Semakau has become a jewel of nature conservation and biodiversity. It is home to a vibrant marine eco-system with many species of coral, crabs, starfishes and sponges. We saw quite a few of them up close, pointed out by our sharp-eyed guides, when we took a walk on the sands and corals exposed at low tide.
Many Singaporeans visit Semakau to enjoy the marine life, bird-watching, stargazing and sport fishing. At least three couples have had their wedding photos shot there!
Urbanised Singapore contains a great wealth of plant and animal life, and unique ecosystems. We should respect and take care of nature and our environment - they are an important part of our heritage. – LHL
